The Gift of Sight Alliance is a subsidiary of the Mutual Assistance Association for the  Ethiopian Community in Dallas/Fort Worth (MAAEC), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. The Alliance was established to provide effective assistance to the Eye Bank of Ethiopia (EBE) which conducts surgery on blind people in Ethiopia enabling them to gain eye sight, some for the first time, years after their birth. The Alliance’s vision and objective is to eliminate preventable blindness in Ethiopia. The Alliance’s activities were initiated by Kidane Alemayehu, EBE’s Ambassador, as MAAEC’s Eye Bank support group chaired by the late Honourable Seyfe Tadesse, former President of the Ethiopian Parliament. With the active effort of the support group,
MAAEC was able to raise the required funds that enabled it to send a container load of medical equipment to Hawassa Hospital as well as to the Eye Bank of Ethiopia. Later, the support group expanded its base and renamed itself as the Gift of Sight Alliance with affiliated support groups in other US cities such as Seattle, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Detroit, Washington, DC, and Denver. Funds raised through these affiliates as well as supporters in Dallas/Fort Worth were received by the Eye Bank of Ethiopia. The affiliate in Seattle, headed by W/o Menkeli Kanaa, has been very active as it has managed to raise $10,000.00 first and later participated in the Alliance’s raffle sale all for the benefit of the EBE. W/o Menkeli deserves a special mention for her dedication and outstanding contribution for the production of a documentary film about the Eye Bank of Ethiopia and the establishment of this website.
The Gifts of Sight Alliance is currently chaired by Ato/Mr. Betru Gebregziabher. Header photo used under Creative Commons from babasteve  ·
